Thoughts on Stranger in the Kingdom? Did you like the work?

Is its message still relevant today, or have we made progress since the 1950's?

Do you blame other members of the town for Claire's death?

  1. As a new-comer to VT, I liked how much Vermont history was sprinkled though the text.

It was interesting how Mosher explored the idea that the absence of the chance to be prejudiced isn't the same thing as being free from prejudice. The town thought it was pretty open-minded until it actually was faced with a situation to judge.

Nice foreshadowing of this in the diner, with the racist cook and the intriguing "is it a bullet hole, or are we letting our imaginations run away withus?" imagery of the mirror, where the young narrator has to look at both the black preacher AND himself, symbolically, as he mulls this over.
